China National Rice
Research Institute (CNRRI) is an integrated research institute
of multi-
disciplines with rice as its major research subject. It
was established in Hangzhou, Zhejiang
Province as approved by the Chinese State Council in June
1981, and the inauguration was held
in 1989. CNRRI is the largest lump-sum appropriation agricultural
research institute invested
by the State since the founding of the People's Republic
of China. At present, it is under
dual leadership of the Chinese Acad. of Agri. Sci. and
the Zhejiang People's Government.
CNRRI focuses on basic and applicable basic
researches with priority on solving significant
scientific and technical problems in rice production.
It is engaged in rice research at
population, individual, tissue, cell, and molecular levels.
Major tasks are:
1.Collection, conservation, evaluation,
innovation, and utilization of rice germplasm
resources;
2.Significant scientific techniques and
theoretical problems relating yield increase of rice
production, improvement of rice grain quality, tolerance
to bad condition economic efficiency
of rice production;
3.Organization and coordination of priority
rice research programs and integrated research
programs throughout the country;
4.National and international rice scientific
and technical exchange, collaborative & staff-
training; Compilation & publication of academic journals
and books on rice.
The present research institution is: Chinese
National Center for Rice Improvement, Rice Technology
R&D Center, Rice Product Quality Testing Center of
the Ministry of Agri, Sci. & Tech. Information Center,
and Key Lab for Rice Biology of the Ministry of Agri,
i.e. “Four Centers and
One Lab”.
The present staff number of the institute
is 884 (587 farm workers) including 147 senior middle-level
scientists, 40 Ph.D and 29 Masters. CNRRI has also invited
a group of famous scientists at home and abroad as part-time
honorary research professors.
The headquarters is located at the downtown
of Hangzhou with a 19-story-high building used for administration
management, liaison & reception and housing for senior
and middle-level staff. At Fuyang city, 34 km southwest
of Hangzhou, is located CNRRI's experiment station. It
is 494 ha in area and consists of labs, a rice seed engineering
center and an experimental farm. It has Rice Sciences
Building, Administrative Building, Bioengineering Building,
Rice Germplasm Bank, growth chambers, greenhouses, a guest
house for visiting scientists and trainees and other component
facilities. The labs are equipped with 12 million US$
worth of instruments. The subtropical climate and the
Fuchun river nearby endow the station with adequate rainfall,
convenient irrigation &drainage and fertile soil.
CNRRI’s running policies are “Basing the
foothold in Zhejiang Province, keeping in mind the whole
country and in view the whole world”. It takes charge
of national, Ministry of Agri, Zhejiang provincial, the
Chinese Acad of Agri Sci, and international research programs.
Since the foundation, 109 achievements in scientific research
have been obtained with 50 new rice varieties (combinations)
being released, 64 prizes being awarded, including 24
over the second grade by the state, the Ministry of Agri,
and province. Hybrid combination Shanyou 10 awarded the
first grade of the State Sci &Tech Progress. Some
achievements have been screened into the Chinese Top Ten
Scientific and Technical Achievements and the Chinese
Top Ten Scientific and Technical News in 1997, 1998, and
2000, respectively. The application areas under these
achievements have reached 1.0×108 ha with large economic
and social efficiency.
CNRRI presents journals including Chinese
Journal of Rice Science, China Rice, and Chinese Rice
Research Newsletter (in English), publishes many academic
books, and maintains 2 websites: www.cnrri.org and www.chinariceinfo.com.
The library of the institute holds over 40,000 issues
and books.
CNRRI grew up with the reform and open policy
of China, and got supports from the World Bank, UNDP,
IRRI, and the Rockefeller Foundation. It has become a
national research institute with multi-disciplines and
high academic level. CNRRI is endeavoring to be a national
center of rice science research, national center of science
and techniques service, and national center of academic
exchange and staff training, making due contribution to
not only Chinese rice production, but the world rice production
as well.
